Identifying Limiting Beliefs

  The problem with limiting beliefs isn’t that they are hard to change, but that they are hard to find. Limiting beliefs are often part of our unconscious thoughts and generally go unquestioned.  They blend together almost seamlessly with the foundation of our perceptions and usually stay hidden until they are spotted by someone. It is quite easy to spot limiting beliefs in others because we are on the outside looking in. Spotting them in ourselves can be hard.  Fortunately, there is a simple way to bring lots of limiting beliefs into consciousness using just one simple word…Because.

Because

    Because is a special word because when it appears in a sentence it is usually followed by a reason.  Sounds simple enough, right?  Examples include:  
  • I can’t go out tonight because I have to study.
  • I can’t start a new business now because the economy is bad.
  • I don’t have friends because everyone hates me.
Each time you hear “because” you are going to hear a reason for the statement that comes just before it. Now some of the reasons might be facts while others beliefs.  This is why it is important to recognize these two kinds of reasons. Facts are descriptions of reality such as, “I am cold because it is snowing.” “It is snowing” is an accurate description of the environment.  It is true that the snow can cause people to feel cold. This is not an example of a limiting belief but rather a result of reality.  This is a fact. Beliefs which are often confused with facts are simply descriptions of our own ideas based on our feelings. “I don’t have friends because everyone hates me,” is a limiting belief, because it is not based on a fact or reality.  It is just a belief or idea thought to be real. When you challenge that statement, isn’t it a little ridiculous to think that out of millions of people on the planet, everyone hates you?     c29

 Choosing the problem

Limiting beliefs cause difficulties for us so let’s decide which difficulties we are going to tackle. What is happening in your life that you think may be a result of limiting beliefs?  Don’t be alarmed if there is only one or more than ten. Write each problem on a separate sheet of paper.     Example: I can’t get promoted….    

List your possible reasons

For each problem, write a sentence that briefly describes the problem followed by the word because.  When you read the sentence, what pops into your mind that finishes the sentence?     Example: I can’t get promoted because_______________.     Write as many finished sentences as you feel you need to write for each problem. Just write! Don’t judge!  The purpose of this exercise is to uncover those limiting beliefs.  Go as quickly as you can. This method allows the information to be released from your unconscious mind effortlessly.   This exercise shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes to complete.  But, take as much time as you need. Once done, hold on to that list!  Next time I will show how to eliminate those limiting beliefs.
