The whole science of personalities intrigues me because so much has been written about it. Personality is the unique combination of patterns that influence behavior, thought, motivation, and emotion in a human being. Personality is a person's unique behavioral and cognitive patterns; OR, a person's unique consistent pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting. In everyday terms, personality is who you are inside, how you react to certain stimuli. It helps us to understand what motivates you, your feelings and thoughts.
Personalities are said to be defined by “types”. Also, knowing your personality type can help glean important insight and understanding into who you are authentically. Even more importantly, when you understand your personality type you get that much closer to gaining more clarity about your purpose!
According to the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) there are sixteen (16) personality types. These types are made up of eight (8) characteristics. Psychologists and businesses have been using this test and similar ones for decades. Why? Because your personality can tell them a great deal about your natural talents, where you thrive, your strengths and who you will and won’t get along with. That is incredible information. Wouldn’t you want to know that about yourself?
What are the Eight Characteristics?
Extravert vs Introvert: How we interact with the world and where we direct and receive energy. Extraverts are oriented to their outer world and their attention is focused mainly outside of self. Introverts on the other hand are oriented to their inner world and their attention is mainly focused inward.
Sensor vs Intuitive: The kind of information we naturally notice. Sensors seek concrete information, are attentive to what is going on around them and tend to recall facts quite well. The Intuitive is more concerned with looking for meaning and exploring possibilities which is referred to as intuition.
Thinker vs Feeler: How we make decisions. Thinkers tend to value logic above all else. They are very objective and often analytical. The Feeler values caring and doing the right thing. They tend to be empathetic and make decisions based upon how they feel.
Judger vs Perceiver: How we like to structure our lives. Judgers prefer a structured life and orderly environment. They want to know what to expect before they take action. Perceivers prefer to live spontaneously. They enjoy remaining flexible so they can stay open to possibilities.
As you can see each characteristic has its own contrasting alternative. Somewhere within these eight characteristics is the authentic YOU. Wouldn’t you like to find out which is YOU?
