Purpose + Passion = Sustainable Happiness

Burnt out at work? Thinking about trying a new career? Go back to school? What should you do with your life? Where should you turn next? Who hasn’t pondered these questions before?  Am I all up in your life right now?  So many people are where you are…so don’t kick yourself.

I know you’ve heard people say you should follow your passion.  I know I heard it a lot when I was pondering my questions.  Doesn’t that sound a bit dreamy? Unless you consider wanting to eat on a regular basis to be your passion, passion isn’t the problem here. Can you pay bills with passion? Passion is rarely enough to get you through on its own. So what do you do if passion alone won’t cut it?  You need to understand your purpose in order to discover your passion and then you must find the place where your passion and your purpose intersect.  It is only from that place that you create sustainable happiness.

The Intersection of Purpose & Passion

Purpose implies meaning, yet it also implies something that it feels like we were made to do. It is instinctual, intuitive and powerful.  Passion is a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something.  When purpose and passion intersect…something amazing is revealed.  At that exact point the door to live the life in which you were created becomes visible.

In life, there are things we just absolutely love to do! There are things we naturally feel drawn to. There are activities we can lose ourselves in—getting in the flow. There are things we’re passionate about, that inspire us, or that get us all riled up. When you are in a search for your purpose an important place to look are at THESE things! It’s that inner nudge that pulls us toward what we love, do naturally, and are passionate about.

Begin your pursuit by getting involved with different groups and explore different purposes you care about. I’m not talking about an all-consuming cause, but you do need something you care enough about to give up sleeping in on the weekends.  I tell my clients that your purpose is why you are here, but your passion is the things you love that connect it all together.  When you understand the formula for sustainable happiness you will actively pursue purpose and passion together.  Imagine what it will look like at the your intersection of purpose and passion!
